Why the camera you use (probably) doesn’t matter.

We live in a world where we want, want, want, and this goes for photographers as much as anyone else. However, the fact is, your latest camera you have just bought, really didn’t matter to your photography as much as you hoped. Here’s why…

First of all, if you’re a professional photographer, this doesn’t apply to you, as you need a very specific tool for the job. However, if you’re not making money from your camera, it’s a very different story.

If you’ve bought a mirrorless camera in the last 7 or 8 years, you’ll have advances in autofocus that’s for sure, but everything else will pretty much be the same. If you’re a landscape photographer (the ones who seem to be prime candidates for extreme camera purchases), then of course autofocus doesn’t matter as much to those who photograph wildlife.

So, why doesn’t your camera matter?

Think about what…

The Stuff of Life – The Trey Riel

Small mud carps or β€œTrey Riel” (Henicorhynchus entmema and H. siamensis) are the most commercially important keystone species in Cambodia, according to Wonders of the Mekong project. These two species are also very important to the ecology of the Mekong River basin and the food security of people living in the region..

In Cambodia’sTonle Sap Lake, anyone with the permission of the government can catch Riel for only five to six days from the 8th day of the dark moon to before the full moon, based on the Khmer calendar. After dressing the Riel, Khmer women put the fish in bamboo containers and crush it with their feet, similar to wine made by stepping on grapes.

Took a trip on the ferry over the Tonle Sap river today to get out and make some pictures. Using my Fujifilm XT3 and an XF 16-80 f4 OIS WR zoom. The lens is new too me so was really just giving it a workout.

This is a fine walk around and travel lens, no real need to carry anything else.

Along the Tracks – Phnom Penh

opinons, thoughts, photography, pictures, public, Travel, Uncategorized

The slum district along the railway tracks leading out of Phnom Penh through Toul Kok is rumoured to be developed after all the people are moved out.

It is an area I have documented quite a bit over the years and I thought I had better go take a fresh look before it disappears under concrete and glass. Apparently, there are plans to redevelop the railway lines that run through it and the people will be required to move.

The VILTROX 23mm f1.4

Uncategorized

When I picked up this lens recently as part of a purchase of my Fuji X Pro 3 I was not expecting the result to match the Fuji XF 23mm f2 that I already owned but I was pleasantly surprised when I used it for the first time. It is, I found, a solidly built lens with equally solid performance.

The images it produces are sharp and contrasty but a little warmer in colour than the XF 23mm f2 and the AF is surprisingly a little faster, giving excellent results in my street pictures as can be seen below in the images of Venice Beach, California on a recent trip I was fortunate to make.

I found myself using this lens a lot on that trip as it was giving me the results I wanted and was quick and easy to use although a little heavier than the Fuji XF 23 f2. It is certainly a lens I would recommend.

Fuji X Pro2 + XF 50mm f2 and 56mm f1.2 great for street.

Both these lenses are suitable for street photography but I find the smaller and lighter XF 50mm f2 gives equally good results as its more expensive and heavier sister lens the XF 56mm f1.2
