I bought my D850 used, with more than 300,000 shutter actuations. It has since given me some of the finest image quality I’ve seen from a camera I own.

Look at the child turning towards the camera. The fine strands of hair, the texture of the clay pot and the light in the eyes are all there. I noticed the expression first. The detail lets me stay with it.

The D850 records a remarkable amount, but it asks something of the photographer too. A little camera shake can be plain to see if not handled with care, and it is a substantial body to carry all day.

These three pictures were made with the D850. The colour, fine detail and clarity give me plenty to work with, while the children’s expressions give me a reason to care about the frames. I cannot call it the best DSLR for everybody. For the quality of photographs it can produce, though, I think it has a serious claim.
