The Nikon D850 remains one of the finest stills cameras ever made. Its 45.7-megapixel sensor, genuine ISO 64 setting and excellent dynamic range continue to deliver beautifully detailed files suitable for substantial cropping and large prints.

Its age shows mainly in the conveniences surrounding the photograph—not in the photograph itself.

A proper working camera

The D850 was designed to be operated rather than admired. Its large optical viewfinder, illuminated controls, deep grip, long battery life and weather-resistant construction make it a dependable working machine.

Its 153-point autofocus system remains fast and accurate through the viewfinder. Seven frames per second is sufficient for most assignments, while the optional MB-D18 grip and appropriate battery can increase that to nine.

For street and documentary photography, however, the camera is not discreet. With a large professional zoom it becomes a serious lump to carry around Phnom Penh. Fit a modest 35mm, 50mm or 85mm prime and it becomes considerably more pleasant—and less intimidating to the people being photographed.

Where its sensor still excels

At low ISO, the D850 can still stand beside expensive contemporary cameras. Landscapes, architecture, portraits, studio work and carefully composed street scenes play directly to its strengths.

The absence of an optical low-pass filter helps it capture exceptionally fine detail. That resolution also exposes weak technique: slight camera movement, inaccurate focus and mediocre lenses become easier to see. It is a demanding camera, but an honest one.

Black-and-white files are particularly satisfying. The generous tonal information gives plenty of room for controlling skies, opening shadows and maintaining texture in faces. It does not imitate the distinctive coarser character of the D700; it gives you a cleaner, more detailed negative from which to create your own interpretation.

Action and wildlife

The D850 remains capable of serious wildlife, sports and event photography. Its autofocus came from Nikon’s professional D5 generation, and the camera combines that performance with much greater resolution.

Modern mirrorless bodies nevertheless make difficult action easier. Cameras such as the Z8 can recognise eyes, animals and birds and follow them across almost the complete frame. With the D850, the photographer must understand the autofocus system, select an appropriate area mode and anticipate where the subject is going.

That is not necessarily a disadvantage. It simply asks more of the person holding it.

The attraction of F-mount lenses

Nikon’s move to the Z system has pushed many excellent F-mount lenses onto the used market. That gives the D850 access to professional glass that once cost a small fortune.

The D850 with the 85mm f/1.8G would be a formidable combination: detailed without being clinically lifeless, fast enough for people and capable of beautifully controlled separation. A 35mm or 50mm prime would create a lighter, more immediate street outfit.

The D850 is not the sensible choice for everyone in 2026. Someone starting without lenses would usually be better served by Nikon’s Z system. Video makers, photographers needing advanced subject recognition and anyone wanting a small travelling kit also have better modern alternatives.

But for a photographer already invested in Nikon F-mount glass, who values an optical viewfinder and principally makes still photographs, the D850 remains far more than merely useful.

It may represent the point at which the DSLR reached maturity: enough resolution, enough speed, excellent autofocus and practically no weakness that prevents a knowledgeable photographer from doing serious work.
